Stop MOTION

Check out this amazing music video.  I find stop motion kinda creepy ever since watching the episode of Wallace and Grommit where the penguin puts on a surgical glove and breaks into the art gallery pretending to be a chicken.

But I also have a lot of respect for those who choose stop-motion animation.  It’s insanely hard to do and when done right, turns out beautifully.  Like Grizzly Bear’s video for a song of their album Veckatimest called Ready, Able.

Are you down with G-O-D

Growing up I was religionless.  I was baptized Anglican, but that was more so that my conspiracy theorist father could sleep at night knowing we weren’t going to hell for original sin.  My parents were both agnostic and it was just never a thing.  My grandmothers were always religious, so I just assumed old people were religious, and why wouldn’t they be, they were going to die soon.

Around ten years old a baby-sitter of mine told me about how he started his own religion.  The only rule was: no one else could join.  I thought that a fine basis of a religious movement and quickly developed “Chloeism.”  I realize now it was his way of teaching me organized religion sucks.  And it does.  Kinda.

I had been a practicing Chloeism for many years up until recently when I started flirting with the idea of going to church.  I had gone to chapel in high school and quite enjoyed the experience.   After having a bad experience with some “friends” I figured the people in church couldn’t be any worse than the people who weren’t in church.  People that wouldn’t cook all the food your mother had left you while she was out of town, people that wouldn’t eat that same food off the cooking sheet they placed on my mothers expensive Turkish rug.  – I’m a little bitter.

So I started looking around for churches.  Which wasn’t hard because I live in Toronto and there is a plethora of places of worship.  But which was right for me?  I looked into a bunch of United Churches until at the last minute I found St. John’s Anglican that happened to be quite close to where I live.  The website was light and the people in the pictures were smiling genuine smiles, so I figured why the heck not!

As I biked over to the church I was nervously excited.  I had dressed in my Sunday’s best and was hoping to make a good first impression on the churchgoers.  As I got to the church I hopped off my bike and looking around for somewhere to lock it.  There was no fence, no pole, no nothing.  And just as I was thinking “this is clearly a sign God does not want you in his house” a nice lady asked me if I would like to bring my bike into the church.  She kindly showed me where I could put it and then showed me the way from the basement to the chapel.  Everyone I met thereafter was just as nice.

The inside of the chapel was painted a pale purple, and purple being my favourite colour, I knew I was in a good place.  The service started and the children of the church gathered for their lesson, which as it turns out, is just a paired down version of the readings for the day, which make it very easy to understand what’s happening.  It was the second week of lent and they had a guest pastor (preacher?  reverend?  I dunno).  Her name was Sara Boyles and instead of saying “he” when referring to God  she said “she” which I thought was pretty cool.  Turns out this church practices inclusive language.  They are also all such wonderful people.  They are happy to meet you and happy to introduce you to someone they think you should meet. They want to know about you and what you do.  And they also have a great sense of humour.  All of them.  In the time I have been back many things have gone wrong during the services but no one complains.  IN fact most people laugh it off and we all continue on our way.  Another thing I love is the children of the church.  They are all ages but they are some of the most interesting, thoughtful children I have ever met.  I started going to the youth lunches that happen once and month and they all have very interesting questions.  I don’t always agree with the answers the reverend gives but I appreciate that he allows me to give my own versions of answers.

This is such a wonderful place.  I have been taking a few weeks off after graduating to sleep and enjoy my life before I officially have to become an adult and GET A JOB!  But I don’t feel guilty for not going, and I don’t feel that they would want me to.  I also don’t feel “God would want me to” but that’s a different story for a different post.

My good friend MANNIE is in a band.  That band is called THE AIRPLANE BOYS.  That band is also, AWESOME.

They have a new song you can download FOR FREE.  It’s called “Two Let Go.” This is what they had to say about it.

There’s you, and there’s whatever circumstance your’re in. To let go of something must be one of the hardest things we as humans can endure. Whether it be a loved one, significant other, valuable possession, or a memory that leaves an imprint in your mind. They’re all key parts in our lives that we use to measure who we are, or how far we’ve come. We may use them as momentos that we can be proud of aswell, maybe even as subjects to learn from. To me it doesn’t really matter what we use them for. The thing is not everything lasts, nothing lasts forever on earth. Everything must come to pass or come to an end. So using the time wisely with the things that we cherish is the best we can do.. or all we can do. To some that may be a sad reality. But the flip side of it is that.. when something ends there is always a new beginning, a second chance so to speak. New beginnings can be dark but in the end of that beginning we realize the beauty and how necessary it was.

Our God is an Awesome God

He reigns from heaven above!

I thought this was hilarious when I stumbled upon it (get it?)  On top of that check out Raptor Jesus.

I don’t mean to be offensive.  I am currently exploring religion and spirituality so I’m down with G-O-D.

My High School

I attended a boardings school in Port Hope, Ontario called Trinity College School.  Every morning we would have chapel before classes.  Most people hated it because they had to wake up early and you got detention if you weren’t there.  But it was my favourite part of the day.  Everyone (usually) in their uniforms in a beautiful old stone building with the sunlight streaming in.  Very boarding school.  Click HERE to see an example.
